You sat waiting, tapping your foot and the back of your phone as you sat on the bench outside the moving theater for him to show. Normally he was a few minutes late but this was the longest he had been, if he ever was it was within 5 to 10 minutes and he made it seem like he had been going hours. Checking your phone for the hundredth time you sighed as you looked back up and strained your neck to see if you could find him looking for you.

The sound of your phone ringing made you jump slightly at the sound of it. Checking it you were surprised at the number. “Hello?” answering with a smile as the person on the other line spoke the smile you answered with had disappeared and a different look spread across your face. “I’ll… I’ll be right there!” you said stuttering quickly as your heart dropped as you hurried to your car fumbling your bag trying to get your keys out. Yanking your car door open you fumbled with the keys as you slid into the drivers sear, your mind racing with emotion and thoughts. Finally sliding the key into the ignition you gripped the steering wheel hard, and drove as fast as you could, not caring about all the traffic laws you knew you were breaking.

Upon arriving you asked the lady at the desk witch room to go to and practically ran to it. The hall was filled with family, “Go on in dear, you were the first he wanted to see…” his mother said as she stroked a strand of your hair. Nodding your head, you took a deep breath as you opened the door to his room, almost being sick in the process at the sight of him. His face was all scratched and bruised, he had a wrap around his head and was spotted with blood on one side, his right eye was red and almost swollen shut, his arm wrapped and the other had tubes running into it with clear and red liquid. Machines beeped and blinked as they monitored him but annoying everyone else.

He smiled at you like he always did and did his best to wink with his good eye, “Hey you, what took you so long” he teased. Holding back tears, you walked in as the door clicked shut behind you, setting down your bag on the floor by one of the chairs against the wall you walked to his bed side. His hand slid into yours as he smiled at you and squeezed your hand as you returned the gesture. “You didn't have to hurry…” you said blinking back tears.

“I was just trying to see you faster” he said making you blush slightly as he squeezed your hand again. You stood there with your hand in his while looking at his scratched up face. Being lost in your own thoughts you didn't even realize that you had lost hold on your tears as they streamed down your cheeks. “Hey now…” he said softly as he moved as best he could in his state and brushed the tears away with his thumb before he used his hand to cup your cheek. “Look at you…” your voice cracking as you moved your head to his and rested your forehead against his.

“Shhh.... come here love…” he soothed as he brought you on the bed with him. You rested against his chest with his arms around you as best as they could be. He kissed the top of your head as he held you tight and rubbed your side softly. Resting against his chest you listened to the steady beat of his heart as you started to drift to sleep, as you did you felt his hand move under your chin and lift your head to his shoulder before you felt the warmth of his lips pressed to your own.

Shocked you laid against his side unsure what to do, when he didn’t stop you decided to kiss him back. Though his lips were dry they were warm against yours as they kissed you soft and gentle. His hand moved to your cheek as he held the kiss longer tell neither of you could breath. “I had to tell you...” he whispered slightly out of breath from the kiss, “I just didn’t know how…” wiping the tear from your cheek that had fallen during the surprise kiss he looked at you.

Opening your mouth to reply nothing came out; you looked at him with your lips parted slightly. You let out your breath you were going to use to speak as you put your hand on his cheek and brought him to you as you kissed again. You couldn’t find the words to tell him but you knew a kiss would. You loved him back.

You fell asleep against his chest as he held you tightly. As you slept he whispered to you his hearts desires, his plans to propose and what he wanted with the wedding, his thoughts on their first home the moment you told him you were pregnant with his child, when the baby was born the child being a daddy’s boy or girl, how you would handle them in the teenage years, being there for their wedding and when they had kids.

Most of all, he told you of how he fell in love with you since they day you met when you stepped on his foot walking out of the coffee shop and spilling your coffee all over him when he was already late for work. “I will never forget that day, for that’s the day I fell in love with you. I will never in a million…trillion years, forget you…” he whispered to you as he stroked the back of your hair.

When you awoke the next morning you were surprised to find it silent. Laying there for a minute, his once beating chest was silent, his once tight arms around your where limp as his head rested against your own. You said his name thought you knew he wouldn’t respond for he was already gone. Moving your head you looked up into his bruised and scratched face, you were surprised to find his eyes open but they didn’t look down at you they looked across the room to a small table that normally would be used to feed the patient. On the small table was a little square black box, kissing his shoulder you reluctantly got out of his arms and his bed and walked to across the room to the little box.

Putting your hand to your mouth as you looked down at the little black box your heart ached as a few tears flowed from your eyes down your face. It was a beautiful yet simple engagement ring. You were in such shock you started to shake slightly. Looking at him then back at the ring you slowly plucked it from the box and set the box back down. The ring shined in the white light of the hospital room, slowly sliding the ring on your finger; it fit perfectly.

“You were him…” you whispered as you looked at the ring as you slowly walked to the side of his bed. Running her hand through his hair you then closed his eyes fully, “My prince, my soul mate… my best friend…” you said your voice cracking as you broke down as you spoke. “I can’t believe you were going to propose and now… you’re… you’re gone…” sliding your hand into his you squeezed it wishing he would squeeze back.

Wiping your tears away it doing you no good as more just spilled over your eye lids and down your cheeks, you leaned forward and kissed him one last time before you softly took your hand out of his. Leaving the side of his bed and going to the door you hesitated with your hand on the door knob, knowing his family was just on the other side of it. How could you tell them that he was gone? Taking a deep breath you slowly turned the nob and went out into the hall, his family consisting of his parents, brother and two sisters, a grandmother and a few aunts and uncles all laid out on chairs and mats provided by the hospital.

Pulling yourself together as best as you could you went to his parents and slowly woke each of them, telling them what had happened between them while showing them the ring. Only to find out that they both knew that he was going to propose tonight and that’s why they had all met with him before you had got there but they didn’t expect him to pass.

You sat kneeling on the green grass taking a bite of a pear though you hated the taste of it, “You know im never going to be with anyone else” You said to his headstone as you took another bite and spoke with your mouth full. “I can’t, no one is you” You knew he was always with you. You could always feel the slight tingle in your hand as if he was holding it along with a similar feeling on your cheek, forehead and lips as if he had kissed you. You never did marry, nor have a family; before you passed you were young at heart and high spirited, you died of old age and of a healed heart that had finally been mended now that you were back with your love.
